Should this or the older file be deleted?

Recently, both @Lekritz and @Thejiujiangdragon have proposed this file for deletion as File:Rick Astley - Never Gonna Give You Up.ogg, another sample of the same song, already exists. I was unaware of the guideline setting a limit of one sample per song; thanks for pointing it out. However, I think that the older file should instead be deleted. The reason I uploaded this new file was at the suggestion of the GAN reviewer for Rickrolling, @Trainsandotherthings:, who thought it would be better to include the beginning of the song, as this is the part associated with rickrolling. I agree with this, so I think this sample of should be kept to be used on both Rickrolling and Never Gonna Give You Up, as the beginning of the song is relevant to both articles. — Vigilant Cosmic Penguin 🐧 (talk | contribs) 03:03, 4 March 2026 (UTC)

Agree. This part is indeed more associated with rickrolling and is also the most iconic and recognisable part of the song. We should put this audio file on both the Never Gonna Give You Up page and Rickrolling.

However, I believe it should be deleted anyway so it can be re-uploaded as an OGG file with reduced bitrate. It follows WP:SAMPLE more accordingly. Nutella lover • [ chat│supervise ] 06:42, 4 March 2026 (UTC)

I am not well versed in our policies on audio files, but as far as which of the two samples are used, I do stand by my recommendation that the intro sample be used. If this needs to be deleted and reuploaded to meet WP:SAMPLE then I have no objection to that. Trainsandotherthings (talk) 23:00, 4 March 2026 (UTC)

I am hereby notifying Vigilantcosmicpenguin (uploader of this file here), dawnseeker2000 (uploader of the original file), ApexParagon (who replaced this file with the original file in the article Rickrolling), Skyshifter (who reverted the edits previously mentioned), thejiujiangdragon (who endorsed my deletion proposal) and Trainsandotherthings. I think this topic was really left without reaching any meaningful consensus and needs further discussion, because what is currently going on — having two different samples of one song — violates policy established in WP:SAMPLE.
